The quarter-finals between Brazil and France went down in the annals of World Cup history as an offensive spectacle. Both teams played on goal from the start. Brazil took the lead after a combination via Josimar, Müller and Junior by Careca. Platini equalized just before the break. Despite the enormous heat, the game remained at a high level in the second half. Substitute Zico missed a penalty after a foul on Branco 15 minutes before the end of regular time. No team was able to score in extra time. So a penalty shoot-out had to decide. On the Brazilian side, Sócrates (Bats fended off) and Júlio César (post) awarded, while the French only awarded midfielder Platini (via goal). The reigning European champions France made it to the semi-finals. Brazil failed again because of its attempt to get the fourth title.
