Mauro Geraldo Galvão or Mauro Galvão for short (born December 19, 1961 in Porto Alegre ) is a former Brazilian soccer player and current coach.
Player career
society
Galvão began his career in 1979 with the Brazilian club SC Internacional . He was able to celebrate his first successes as a professional footballer with the Red-Whites . The defender was involved in winning the national championship in Rio Grande do Sul from 1981 to 1984 and the Brazilian championship in 1979. Already in 1980 Galvão reached the final of the Copa Libertadores with his team . In the two finals, however, they were narrowly defeated by Nacional Montevideo from Uruguay after 0-0 and 0-1. Internacional had never made it to the finals of this competition before. At this time, the defensive player had already made his breakthrough in the club and was on the field in both games for the full season. After seven years Galvão left the club and joined league rivals Bangu AC . But after only a year he was drawn to Botafogo FR . As in his previous positions, Galvão was also a regular at O Glorioso . In 1989 and 1990 he won the state championship in Rio de Janeiro there , his only BFR title . In the summer of 1990, the defender decided to move to other European countries, where he joined the Swiss club FC Lugano . There he was an indispensable pillar in the team for the next six years. In 1992/93 he made it with the team in the final of the Swiss Cup . In the decisive game, Grasshopper Club Zurich were beaten 4-1 and the first title since the cup success in 1968 was celebrated.
In the summer of 1996 Galvão returned home, where he signed with Grêmio Porto Alegre . The following year he moved to CR Vasco da Gama for three years . With Vasco he collected numerous titles in the autumn of his career. He was able to win the Brazilian championship in 1997 and 2000, second place at the FIFA Club World Cup in 2000, the Copa Mercosur , Torneio Rio-São Paulo in 2000 and the 1998 Rio de Janeiro State Cup with the club . With all successes, Galvão was still used regularly. For example, he played in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup for the full 120 minutes and was captain when they played against Real Madrid in 1998 for the World Cup and lost 2-1. In 2001 the defensive player hired again at Gremio. After the end of the season he retired from active professional football after his club had not offered him a new contract. In his senior year he won the Copa do Brasil for the second time since 1997 .
National team
In 1986 Galvão made his debut in the Brazilian senior team . Before that, he played in the Olympic selection, which won the silver medal at the 1984 Olympics . It was only in the final on August 11, 1984 that they had to admit defeat to the team from France 2-0. In addition to Galvão, the later senior international Carlos Dunga and Luiz Carlos Winck were also in coach Jair Picerni's squad . He was also a junior national player and in 1981 participated in the U-20 World Cup. There he was used in all four games of his team. Two years later, the defender was in the squad for the World Cup in Mexico. There it was already over in the quarter-finals. While Galvão was only a spectator in 1986 and was not used, he made his World Cup debut four years later, at the World Cup in Italy , on June 10, 1990 in a 2-1 win over Sweden , when he was one of the starting eleven during the tournament . Brazil failed in the round of 16 against Argentina, who later took part in the final . One of his greatest successes in the national team was winning the Copa America in 1989 . Galvão made seven out of seven possible bets.
Coaching career
After his active career, Galvão devoted himself to the coaching business. His first position was CR Vasco da Gama in 2003 , where he replaced Antônio Lopes . He secured the club's relegation. The coach was replaced for the new season. For the next two years he was in charge of the teams from Botafogo FR , Náutico Capibaribe and Vila Nova FC . But he never stayed with a club for long. Galvão replaced Luiz Matter in Botafago before he was soon replaced by Paulo Bonamigo .
