The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 1997 was the 41st season of the Brazilian Série A .
Season course
The Série A started its new season on July 5, 1997 and ended on December 21, 1997. The championship was organized by the national association CBF .
During the competition, all 26 Série A clubs met once based on a pre-season schedule. The best eight teams then met again in two groups. Two group winners were determined in each of the first and second legs. These then also competed against each other in the return leg. The final table, including the results from the knockout games, was used to determine the qualification for the international competitions.
Due to a corruption scandal in the 1996 season, Athletico Paranaense was fined five points for the 1997 season. This incident also led the CBF to the decision that the relegated teams from the 1996 season could remain in the league and the starting field was thus increased from 24 to 26 teams. For this, however, had to relegate four teams in the 1997 season.
After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The " Golden Ball ", awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Edmundo from the master CR Vasco da Gama . Edmundo was also the top scorer with 29 goals.
The season had the lowest number of spectators ever to an encounter (as of September 17, 2018). The game between EC Juventude and Portuguesa (result 2: 1) on December 3, 1997 in the Estádio Olímpico Monumental in Porto Alegre was only attended by 55 people.
