history

View into the stadium

The Estádio Olímpico Monumental in Porto Alegre, the capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and with around 1.4 million inhabitants, the tenth largest city in all of Brazil , was built in 1954 and opened on September 19 of the same year. For the first game in the new stadium, the future user club, Grêmio Porto Alegre, and Nacional Montevideo from Uruguay met for a friendly game that ended with a 2-0 for the hosts and a major mass brawl. Gremio player Vitor scored the first goal of the game at the Estádio Olímpico Monumental. Since then, Grêmio Porto Alegre's stadium has been used as a venue for home games. The club has won two Brazilian soccer championships to this day, winning titles in 1981 and 1996. In 1983 and 1995 they also won the Copa Libertadores , the most important soccer competition for club teams in South America. By winning the Libertadores Cup in 1983 you were entitled to participate in the World Cup of the same year, where Gremio won 2-1 after extra time against Hamburger SV in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo . Grêmio Porto Alegre currently plays in the first Brazilian league, Série A , where you can be found in the upper third of the table.

The Estádio Olímpico Monumental can now accommodate 45,000 spectators. Originally, the stadium was built for 38,000 spectators. In 1980 the stadium was rebuilt and 85,000 people could now attend games in this venue. For safety reasons, the capacity was reduced again in 1991 and from 1991 onwards, 51,081 people still fit into the Estádio Olímpico Monumental. Today the capacity is 45,000 spectators. The record crowd in the stadium was achieved when, on April 26, 1981, AA Ponte Preta visited Gremio Porto Alegre and 85,721 spectators came to the stadium.

Replacement by the Arena do Gremio

Grêmio Porto Alegre moved to the Arena do Grêmio after the 2012 season . It replaced the Estádio Olímpico Monumental, which was demolished, as the club's venue. The Grêmio Arena, which has 60,540 spectators, was commissioned on the occasion of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . However, no tournament games were played in this stadium, as the Estádio Beira-Rio , the venue of Gremio's rivals SC Internacional Porto Alegre, was used for the World Cup .
