The Copa Brasil 1984 was the 28th season of the Brazilian Série A . The name-like competition, the Copa do Brasil , is the Brazilian cup competition, which was held at the same time as the championship from 1989 onwards.
The 38 best teams of the state championships were initially determined as participants. The field was then filled by two teams from the historical best of the association, which had not yet qualified through the first selection. The round was completed with the Series B champion in 1984 Uberlândia EC . However, this only intervened in the third round.
The participating teams were initially divided into eight main groups, which played the preliminary round matches side by side.
1st round :
In groups A to H , the teams played in groups of five with a round trip. The best three in a group went straight to the next round. The fourth placed in each group went to an elimination round.
Elimination round :
The eight teams played against each other once in four pairings. The winners of these games completed the field of participants in the second round.
2nd round :
In groups I to O , the teams played in groups of four with a round trip. The best two in a group went straight to the next round. Likewise the best placed third team.
3rd round :
The 15 qualifiers from the second round were supplemented by the Uberlândia EC as the winner of Serie B 1984. In groups P to S , the teams played in groups of four with a round trip. The best two in a group made it to the quarter-finals.
Final round :
From the quarter-finals to the final, all games were played in home and return matches.
Total table:
An overall table was formed from the results of all games. This is used by the national association to calculate the perpetual best list.
After a tie at the end of the tournament between Santo André and Grêmio, the direct comparison between the two clubs was used to decide the table placement. Santo André made this decision for himself.
The table only served to determine the placement of the individual teams in the season. It is made up of all the games played. In the sorting, reaching the respective final phase has priority over the points scored. The games from the elimination round were not taken into account.
