The Taça Brasil (Brazil Cup) was the first national soccer competition in Brazil. The Taça was hosted by the Brazilian Sports Federation, the CBD , in 1966 . The champion and runner-up were qualified as participants in Copa Libertadores 1967 .

The winners of the Taça Brasil were seen at the time as Campeões, as champions of Brazil. The CBF refused to officially recognize the clubs as Brazilian champions until 2010.

Season course

The competition started on July 10, 1966 in its season and ended on December 7, 1966. At the end of the season, the Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte was able to win the title for the first time.

Attendees

22 clubs took part. The mode consisted of a kind of cup system. Participants were the winners of the 1965 state championships .

mode

After the first and second leg, only the number of wins counted, no other criteria. If both teams have won once, a playoff was played. If this did not result in a winner, the goal difference counted. If the comparison did not result in a winner, the decision was made by tossing a coin.

1st round: In the first round, the participants were divided into two regions according to their origin. In the groups, the teams met in cup mode. The winners were determined in the first and second legs. The final winner of each group moved on to the final round.

Final round: The competition mode remained the same as in the first round. In this, the state champion of Ceará of Fortaleza EC , the state champion of Rio de Janeiro of CR Vasco da Gama , FC Santos as defending champion and Palmeiras São Paulo as vice state champion of São Paulo entered the competition. Palmeiras had qualified as runner-up in the state championship, as the defending champions FC Santos had also become champions in the state championship.

Closing table

The table only served to determine the placement of the individual teams in the season. At times it was used by the association to determine an eternal ranking list. It is made up of all the games played. In the sorting, reaching the respective final phase has priority over the points scored. In the event of a tie, first the wins scored, then the goals scored.
