Football championships of the states of Brazil

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Football championships of the states of Brazil have been held since 1902 and are held by the associations of the individual states. São Paulo was the first state to hold a championship. The São Paulo Athletic Club , founded in 1888 and initiated into the art of football by the English football pioneer Charles William Miller, was the first title holder. In 1905 the championship of Bahia followed and the following year Rio de Janeiro held its first national championship.

In later years the leading teams of the state championships often qualified for supranational regional tournaments. The Torneio Rio-São Paulo , which was held for the first time in 1933 and which mutated in the later 1960s as Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa to the quasi-forerunner of today's national championship, the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol , had the highest priority .

Nowadays, the first half of each year in the Brazilian football calendar is dedicated to the national championships, which despite the national competitions that have now become established, have acquired their own significance. 54 of the 64 participants in the Brazilian Cup, the Copa do Brasil, will be determined from the more successful participants . The results are for non-national in the three "real" leagues participating teams also crucial for qualifying for the fourth highest national league, the Série D .

In most states, 8-12 teams play in the first division of the state championship. Note that relegation in the national championship has no effect on participation in the national championship. For example, several teams from the second or third division of the Campeonato Paulista usually play in one of the three national leagues.

The record state champion is the ABC Natal from Natal , the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte , with 55 titles , followed by the Paysandu SC from Pará and the EC Bahia from Bahia with 47 successes each. ABC holds another record with eleven championships won in a row.
