State Championship of Tocantins
The Tocantins State Championship , also known as Campeonato Tocantinense , is the youngest of the state football championships in Brazil . After Tocantins, with a population of around 1.4 million, was separated from the state of Goiás in 1988 as an independent state, it was not until 1993 that football was professionalized there and a state competition was held for the first time by the Federação Tocantinense de Futebol , which was founded in the same year . The first championship began on April 3, 1993 with the game of Tocantinópolis EC against Miracema EC, which the home side won 4-1. The team from Tocantinópolis should secure the first championship, while the club from Miracema do Tocantins was last - but there was no relegation that season.
Since 2000, Palmas FR, founded in 1997 from the state capital of the same name, which has around 200,000 national capital , has secured a certain degree of supremacy and is now the record champion of the state with seven titles. With ten different clubs that have won championship honors since 1993, competition in this state is arguably more open than in any other state.
In 1997, when the Gurupi EC became the state's first successful defending champion, the Tocantins EC from Miracema do Tocantins achieved a lone record: It not only finished the championship without points, but also goalless.
