The América Futebol Clube (also América de Natal , in lists mostly América-RN ) is a football club in Natal , Brazil . The club colors of the club, founded in 1915, red and white, as well as the logo are derived from the America FC of the same name from Rio de Janeiro . The usual Brazilian mascot is a dragon ( Dragão ). One of the club's nicknames is the Mecão ("great America") derived from América . America's main rival is ABC Natal, also from Natal .

The club plays after descending from the Série B 2014 in the Série C . They last played in the first division in 2008 .

history

In 1919, just four years after it was founded, America won the first state championship in Rio Grande do Norte . Since then, the club has been successful in this competition several times in every decade. Between 1979 and 1982 even four times in a row and 1974 undefeated.

Between 1960 and 1965, America did not take part in any match operations in order to concentrate on building its clubhouse in the Tyrol district . The plant is currently (2008) estimated at a value of 20 million BRL .

In 1973, the club won a national tournament for the first time with the Taça Almir de Albuquerque .

In 1968 America first took part in a national competition, the Taça Brasil , the predecessor of the current cup competition. From 1973 to 1983 America was consistently first class, but after that a relegation set in which even let the club drift into third class in 1987, 1988 and 1990.

It took 14 years until the North Brazilians were first class again in 1997 and were promoted to the first division, the Série A , which has now been created . After only two seasons, América had to return to Série B in 1998. On the other hand, the biggest single success in club history was celebrated in the same year by winning the Copa do Nordeste , so that the AFC was allowed to play in a South American Cup ( Copa Conmebol ) for the first time . There the dragons were eliminated in the first round against Sampaio Corrêa FC from São Luís, the capital of the state of Maranhão . In 2007 America returned to the Série A, but it was immediately relegated. In 2014 there was another descent to the Série C. In the same year, on the other hand, the 34th win of the state championship succeeded . This title was defended in 2015.
