The Arena das Dunas is a football stadium in the Brazilian city of Natal . It was built for the 2014 World Cup and is now mainly used by the América FC football club . The arena is located approx. 3 km south of the city center in the district of Lagoa Nova directly on the BR-101 federal road and offers space for around 35,000 spectators.
history
At the site of today's arena that stood since 1972 Machadão called Estádio Dr. João Cláudio Vasconcelos Machado . After Natal won the bid for the 2014 World Cup , it was decided to demolish the municipal stadium and build a modern football arena in its place .
After construction began in 2011, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was able to officially open the stadium designed by the Populous architectural firm on January 22, 2014 , and handed it over to FIFA in the person of Secretary General Jérôme Valcke . The first game was played four days later on January 26th by the home side of América FC and Confiança SE (2-0).

use
After the World Cup, some grandstands were dismantled, as Natal currently does not have a top division club that would need the high capacity. The main user is the América FC , which regularly plays its home games here. In addition, local rivals ABC Natal occasionally play in the arena and the big clubs from Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo sometimes move here. Otherwise the arena is used for music events.
The four nations tournament took place here in December 2015 .
