Jérôme Valcke (born October 6, 1960 in Paris ) is a French manager and was Secretary General of the World Football Association ( FIFA ) in Zurich from June 27, 2007 to January 13, 2016 . In September 2015, he was released from his duties by FIFA. On January 13, 2016, he was dismissed as General Secretary by FIFA without notice.

activities

Sports journalist at Canal +

From 1984 Valcke worked as a journalist for the French television company Canal + . From 1991 to 1997 he held the post of deputy sports director. In 1997 he took over the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the sports channel Sport +, which he held until 2002.

ISL and Sportfive

In April 2001 he represented the parent company of Canal +, the media group Vivendi , in the audit of the already insolvent International Sport and Leisure (ISL), the most important business partner of FIFA at the time. From 2002 to 2003 Valcke worked at the sports rights agency Sportfive at its headquarters in Geneva as Chief Operating Officer (COO).

FIFA Marketing Director and dismissal after court ruling

In the summer of 2003, Valcke moved to the International Football Association (FIFA) and took on the position of Director Marketing & TV. In December 2006, FIFA separated from him with immediate effect. A New York court found him guilty of having conducted sponsorship negotiations with his competitor Visa and violated Mastercard's right to first negotiate in his role as Marketing Director from summer 2004, despite the existing FIFA contract with long-term partner Mastercard . FIFA was then fined US $ 90 million .

FIFA Secretary General

At the meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee on June 27, 2007, chaired by President Sepp Blatter , Valcke was introduced as the new FIFA Secretary General after only six months and was elected to succeed Urs Linsi , who resigned on June 11, 2007 . Valcke became the first FIFA Secretary General since 1956 who was not from Switzerland .

His election took the public by surprise, as FIFA broke up with him last year because of the disaster with the two US credit card companies. Commenting on reinstatement, FIFA President Blatter said: “You bring strong people back. When he took up his position as Director of Marketing and TV at FIFA four and a half years ago, we were in the red. We now have assets of CHF 752 million . And Urs Linsi left us voluntarily. ”According to Blatter, Valcke was released in December and not released. Valcke responded to his choice with the following statement: "It's like a dream for me."

On September 17, 2015, FIFA released Valcke “from all of his duties with immediate effect until further notice”. The reason given was that the association had received knowledge of a number of allegations concerning Valcke. Therefore, a “formal investigation by the Fifa ethics committee” was commissioned. On October 8, the FIFA Ethics Committee suspended Valcke from all football-related activities for 90 days. Valkcke was accused of having guaranteed 8,700 tickets each for the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups for the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups in the context of trading in VIP ticket packages at the official ticket dealer of FIFA Match AG. For this he is said to have been guaranteed half of the proceeds. Valcke denies these allegations. Furthermore, according to the US judicial authorities, he is said to have passed on 10 million US dollars to the soccer associations CONCACAF and CFU as part of the 2010 World Cup from South Africa . In front of witnesses, he is also said to have said before the 2022 World Cup was awarded to Qatar that the country would receive the tournament. On January 6, 2016, the FIFA Ethics Committee opened formal proceedings against Valcke, which resulted in his immediate dismissal by the Emergency Committee on January 13, 2016. As part of this process, his suspension from all football activities had already been extended by 45 days. One at the Court of Arbitration for Sport filed (CAS) appeal against the FIFA 2016 marked lock and a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs (88,700 euros), the CAS rejected and documented the misconduct by Valcke in a 76-page verdict. Valcke not only helped organize a black market ticket deal before the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but also incurred extra costs of 11.7 million US dollars (9.95 million euros) for private flights and luxury travel at the expense of the World Football Association and its own Son through insider knowledge to a World Cup-related contract in the amount of around 600,000 euros. The Swiss judiciary continues to investigate Jérôme Valcke regardless of the CAS judge's verdict. In May 2019 it became known that Valcke had failed to file a lawsuit against his ban imposed by FIFA until 2025 before the Swiss Federal Supreme Court.

Private

Valcke is married and has two children. In addition to his native French , he speaks English , German and Spanish . He lives in Wollerau in Switzerland.
