Sociedade Esportiva do Gama is a football club from the satellite city of the same name in the Brazilian capital Brasília , the Distrito Federal do Brasil . The club colors are green and white. Green dominates in the home and white in the away shirts. With eleven district championships , Gama is a record holder of the title. Gama’s arch-rival is Brasiliense FC .
history
The club was founded in 1975 by Hermínio Ferreira Neves. Neves was president of the amateur team Minas Atlético Clube. The aim was to found a professional football club that would represent the city of Gama in its region. On November 15, 1975 the time had come and the association was formed.
The club started with players from various amateur teams in the city and soon won the sympathy of the local population. On February 21, 1976, the team carried out its first professional game at Torneio Imprensa. With the support of Valmir Campelo de Bezerra, the regional administrator of the city of Gama and a great admirer of local football, the Estádio da Administração da Gama was rebuilt and reopened on October 9, 1977. Two years later Gama played for the first time in the major Brazilian division that Series A . By decisions of the Brazilian military government, the field of participants for the 1979 season had been increased to a total of 94 teams, from which Gama also benefited. In the tournament, the club reached the second round. Despite the reduction to 44 clubs for the 1980 series , Gama was able to keep the class, the qualification stipulated that the national champions of the previous year should participate in the league. Gama won the Brasília District Championship for the first time in 1979 . In the following years, the club initially did not play a role in the Série A. The 1990s, in which the club won six regional championships, can be described as the “golden age”. With eleven district championships , Gama is the record title holder ahead of Brasília FC with nine successes (as of the 2018 season).
This succeeded only after Gama became champion in the series B in 1998 . In the 1999 championship , Gama had originally qualified for the quarter-finals. Due to the rise, the then president, Wagner Marques, changed the name of the association to Gamma (two "m" in the middle). The following didn't like this change. Due to re-evaluations of games, Gama should have been relegated to Série B again at the end of the season. Gama sued this decision. The national association was unable to organize a competition for 2000 because of this lawsuit. For the alternative event, the Copa João Havelange , all members of Série A to D were invited. Gam reached the 26th of 115th places in the season. In 2001 the 20th of 28 places was occupied and in 2002 the club had to say goodbye to the A series as 25th of 26. After the descent, the old name was reintroduced in 2003 - with just an "m".
Over the years, the club gradually declined. For the 2011 season he arrived in the Série D, where he stayed until 2015. Then came as 19th the descent from the national league operation.
Stadion
The SE Gama plays its home games in the Estádio Walmir Campelo Bezerra, generally called Bezerrão . It has a capacity of around 20,000 seats. It was built in 1977. It takes its name from Antônio Walmir Campelo Bezerra, who supervised the construction of the stadium. Although soccer is mainly played there at the moment, it can also be used for other sports.
The first football game in this arena took place on October 9, 1977. Back then, the hometown club Gama played against Botafogo from Rio de Janeiro, which won 3-1.
