The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A 2001 was the 45th season of the Brazilian Série A .

Season course

The Série A started on August 1, 2001 in their new season and ended on December 23, 2001. The championship was again hosted by the national association CBF , after it was unable to do so the previous year. All clubs in the blue group from the Copa João Havelange as well as Botafogo FC (SP) , Paraná Clube and AD São Caetano were allowed to participate . In order to adjust the size of the league again, four teams had to relegate at the end of the season , as the league was to be reduced by two teams in the 2002 season.

During the competition, all 28 Série A clubs met once on a pre-season schedule. The best eight teams then met again in one game in a knockout round. The final was then played in two legs. The final table, including the results from the knockout games, was used to determine the qualification for the international competitions.

After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The " Golden Ball ", awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Alex Mineiro from the champion Athletico Paranaense . The top scorer with 19 goals was Romário from CR Vasco da Gama .
