The Campeonato Brasileiro Série B 2001 was the 22nd season of the second football league in Brazil .

Season course

The competition started its season on August 11, 2001 and ended on December 22, 2001. The championship was organized by the national association CBF . At the end of the season, Paysandu SC celebrated the championship for the second time.

The competition was held in three phases. In the first round , the 28 clubs were divided into two groups according to their regional origin. In the groups, the 14 participants competed against each other in the two legs. The first four clubs in each group advanced to the next round. The last two places in the table meant direct relegation to the Série C. Places twelve and 13 were relegated to relegation games.

In the second round , the eight clubs met in a knockout round. In this, the clubs played against each other in the first and second leg. The winners moved into the final round, which was played in group mode again.

The group winner of the final round became champions. This and the group runner-up rose to the first division in 2002 .

Attendees

The participants were a selection from those of the Série B and C 1999 and the Copa João Havelange in the previous year. The decision to participate was not a purely sporting one. This was carried out by the CBF under the influence of politicians.

The members of the group come from the south-southeast region. The XV de Novembro was deducted five points because this irregularly used the player Nei Bala in the game against União São João EC on September 9th.

2nd round

The group first met the fourth of the opposing group and the second met the third. The first-mentioned team in the pairings had home rights first. In the event of a tie after the return leg, the better performance in the first round decided on progress.

final

The final round was decided on the last group match day, December 22, 2001. The Paysandu SC and the Figueirense FC had their group matches to win to become champions. Both succeeded, Paysandu became champions. In the game between Figueirense and Caxias, the home team stormed the field in the 90th minute. The game was then canceled when Figueirense was 1-0. The CBF rated the game with this result.
