The Copa Brasil 1986 was the 30th season of the Brazilian Série A . The name-like competition, the Copa do Brasil , is the Brazilian cup competition, which was held at the same time as the championship from 1989 onwards.

Season course

The Série A started on August 30, 1986 in their new season and ended on February 25, 1986. The championship was organized by the national association CBF . Due to complaints from various clubs against the stipulated elimination mode, the association was forced to allow a total of 80 clubs to participate in the competition.

After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The “ Golden Ball ”, awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Careca from the champions FC São Paulo , who was also the top scorer.

The participating teams were initially divided into two main groups, which played the preliminary round matches side by side.

A total of 44 teams played in groups A – D. There were eleven clubs in each group. The best six qualified directly for the second round. In addition, the eight best points across all four groups qualified. The four group best from the parallel held competition Copa Brasil Série B 1986 with the groups E-H, complemented the field. After a Segipe player was convicted of doping in the Joinville EC against CS Sergipe game , new lawsuits arose. The CR Vasco da Gama sued against the valuation of the game as a victory for Joinville. Vasco would then not have been allowed to take part in the second round of the championship. Joinville again protested against the protest by Vasco. The association therefore decided to let both clubs take part in the second round. This resulted in an odd number of 33 participants and the CBF invited three more clubs to take part in the second round: Santa Cruz, Sobradinho and Náutico.

Group B

Each club only played against each other once. On the ninth matchday, a game of the CS Sergipe tested positive for doping in an encounter between the Joinville EC and CS Sergipe. The game ended 1-1 but was counted as a victory for Joinville. This triggered the aforementioned protest from CR Vasco da Gama .
