The Copa União 1988 was the 32nd season of the Brazilian Série A .

Season course

The Série A started its new season on September 2, 1988 and ended on February 19, 1989. The championship was organized by the national association CBF . After the chaos 1987 season without the championship climber from which was Série B started.

mode

Scoring : In the preliminary rounds, a team received three points for a win. If there was a tie after regular time, a penalty shoot-out was played. The winner from this received two points. The loser from the penalty shoot-out got one more point. This rule did not apply from the quarter-finals.

1st round : The teams were divided into two groups. First of all, all teams played once against the teams in the other group, i.e. A against B. The two best clubs qualified for the quarter-finals.

2nd round : Now the clubs played against the clubs from their own groups once against each other. From group A, the two best points qualified for the quarter-finals, who had qualified in the first round. In group B, the same applied to only one team.

Intermediate table: A table was created from the results of all games in the first and second round. The club with the best points and not yet qualified moved into the quarter-finals as the last participant. The last four teams were set as relegated in the next season.

Total table : A total table was formed from the results of all games.

After the season, as every year, awards were given to the best players of the year. The “ Golden Ball ”, awarded by the sports magazine Placar , went to Cláudio Taffarel from SC Internacional . Top scorer was Nílson Esídio Mora with 15 goals from SC Internacional.
