Gabriel Barbosa Almeida (born August 30, 1996 in São Bernardo do Campo ), Gabriel Barbosa for short or just Gabriel , also known as Gabigol , is a Brazilian football player . The striker and Brazilian international is under contract with Flamengo Rio de Janeiro .

Career

Gabriel began his career in the youth of FC Santos and started playing for the first team in 2013. On May 26, 2013 he made his debut in the Brazilian Série A in a 0-0 draw against Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . He scored his first goal on August 24, 2014 against EC Vitória . In 2015 and 2016 he won the São Paulo State Championship with the club .

At the end of August 2016, Gabriel moved to the Italian first division club Inter Milan , with whom he signed a five-year contract. At the end of August 2017 he was awarded to the Portuguese first division club Benfica Lisbon , for whom he played a league game until January 2018. At the end of January 2018, Gabriel switched back to Santos on loan. He did hat trick twice during the season . First on May 11th in the first leg of the first leg of the Copa do Brasil 2018 at home against Luverdense EC and on September 2nd in the championship round on matchday 22 against CR Vasco da Gama . That season, Gabriel was the top scorer of the Série A with 22 goals. Instead of returning to Italy for Inter , he was loaned back by the club. Gabriel stayed in Brazil, but switched to the 2018 runner-up in the CR Flamengo . Inter Milan received a loan fee of 3.5 million euros. With Flamengo he won the Copa Libertadores on November 23, 2019 . Barbosa was the tournament's top scorer and scored both goals in the final in a 2-1 win over defending champions River Plate in the final, scoring the decisive goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time. One day later, the preliminary decision in favor of Flamengo was made in the 2019 Brazilian championship and Gabriel was also able to celebrate this title. With 25 goals, he was also the top scorer of the championship. At the end of January 2020, his final move to Flamengo was announced. The transfer fee for 90% of the transfer rights was 16.5 million euros. The contract had a term until December 2024.

National team

Gabriel took part with the U17 selection in 2011 at the U17 World Cup in Mexico , where his team failed in the quarterfinals on the hosts . From 2014 he played for the U20 national team , with which he took part in the U20 South American Championship in Uruguay in early 2015 .

On May 30, 2016 Gabriel made his debut against Panama in the senior team and scored the goal to make it 2-0. He was appointed to the Brazilian squad for the 2016 Copa América Centenario in the United States . In the tournament, he failed with his team after the group stage , in which Gabriel was used in all three games and scored a goal. He was also appointed to the squad in his home country for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There he was used in all six games of his team and scored two goals in the group game against Denmark . On August 20, 2016, Gabriel won the gold medal with Brazil.
