Born an only child, De Arrascaeta began playing football at Pescadores Unidos in his native city at the age of four . In the U-15 he played for the Club Anglo in Fray Bentos . He moved to Defensor from Nuevo Berlín in November 2010. In 2012, he finished second with the team at the Copa Libertadores Sub-20 . In the course of the tournament he convinced after various substitutions and drew attention to his talent. His first competitive match at senior level, he played under coach Tabare Silva on October 21, 2012 at 3: 1 victory over Danubio , when the 18-year-old in the 62 minutes for Diego Rodríguez came on and his debut in the Uruguayan Primera Division came . During the entire 2012/13 season, he played 16 games and scored three goals. He ended his first professional year as runner-up behind the Peñarols team .

In the 2012/13 season he was voted the third best player in the El Observador newspaper's election for the best player of the season behind Marcelo Zalayeta and Antonio Pacheco, tied with Carlos Valdez and Maximiliano Rodríguez . In addition, with a clear majority of 75% of the votes, it was named the new discovery of the season. De Arrascaeta has already attracted the interest of various European clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain and AS Roma.

In the 2013/14 season he played in 26 other first division matches (seven goals) until the end of the Clausura 2014 and was also used in twelve games (two goals) of the 2014 Copa Libertadores . In the Apertura 2014 he was used eleven times in the Primera División and scored six goals.

Cruzeiro EC

After he reported on his move to Brazil to SC Internacional in January 2015 and the transfer was confirmed by his previous employer, but not yet officially announced, the change appeared in the second half of January due to an offer made at short notice by competitor Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte in the amount of allegedly four million euros for 50 percent of the transfer rights initially considered unsafe. Ultimately, Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte prevailed, hired De Arrascaeta, who was considered a great talent, and, according to the player's advisor, paid the record transfer fee of five million US dollars for 50 percent of the transfer rights for Uruguayan football. The other half is owned by former soccer player and current player advisor Daniel Fonseca . So far (as of June 25, 2018) he has played 118 league games for the Brazilians and scored 31 goals (Mineiro I: 43 games / 14 goals; Série A: 75/17; Primeira Liga: 5/3). He also played 16 games (three goals) in the 2015 and 2018 Copa Libertadores , twice (no goal) in the 2017 Copa Sudamericana and 22 times (four goals) in the Copa do Brasil .

In February 2018, Cruzeiro extended the contract with De Arrascaeta until the end of 2021. Cruzeiro owned 30% of the transfer rights at the time of the extension. His fee was set at 120 million real . In June of that year it became known that AS Monaco was preparing an offer to buy the player. In this context, different ownership of the transfer rights and the transfer fee were mentioned. Accordingly, Cruzeiro holds 25 instead of 30 percent of the shares. Another 50% is held by his former club Defensor Sporting and 25% by Pedro Lourenço, the owner of the Supermercados BH chain , who acts as a consultant here. A possible transfer fee was named 80 million euros, which is about three times the amount published in February. The negotiations came about with the help of the players' agent Jorge Mendes without Cruzeiro being informed by them. He was already in contact with AS Monaco and Wolverhampton Wanderers regarding a possible change. During a press conference at the 2018 World Cup on June 16, De Arrascaeta announced that he had no information about an offer from AS Monaco.

After De Arrascaeta scored 1-0 in the eighth-final match of the Copa Libertadores 2018 against Flamengo Rio de Janeiro on August 8, 2018 (result-2-0), Cruzeiro became the most successful foreign goal scorer. Across all competitions, he scored 46 goals for Raposa , overtaking previous record holder Marcelo Moreno .

Before joining Flamengo in 2019, De Arrascaeta had played 188 games for the club across all competitions, scoring 50 goals.

CR Flamengo

In January 2019, De Arrascaeta moved to Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . He signed a five-year contract with the club. Cruzeiro received a transfer fee of 55 million real. Of these, 30 million were due immediately. The club is to receive the remaining sum in installments. With the change, 50 percent of the transfer rights were transferred to Flamengo, which were with Cruzeiro and Supermercados BH. Part of the change was also Flamengo's waiver of four million reals, which the club was still entitled to from the transfer of player Federico Mancuello to Cruzeiro. For another 25 percent of the rights, Defensor Sporting paid another 21 million reals as the further rights holder. Another agreement between Defensor Sporting and Flamengo provides that Flamengo will acquire half of the 25% still held by Defensor Sporting if De Arrascaeta has played at least 88 full games by the end of 2020. With the club he won on November 23, 2019 2019 the Copa Libertadores . A day later, in the Brazilian championship 2019, the preliminary decision was made in favor of Flamengo and De Arrascaeta was also able to celebrate this title.
