Nuevo Berlín is a city in western Uruguay .
geography
It is located in the 2nd sector of the Río Negro department on the east bank of the Uruguay River north of Fray Bentos . To the west are the several river islands in the Río Uruguay, whose respective belonging to Uruguayan or Argentine national territory was regulated on the basis of the treaty of April 7, 1961 ( Tratado del 7 de Abril de 1961 ). These are, among others, the Isla Nuevo Berlín , the Isla del Burro , the Isla Filomena Grande , the Isla Palma Chico , the Isla Filomena Chica , the Isla Masones and the Isla García .
Nuevo Berlín is the beginning or end of the Ruta 20 highway , which runs from here in an easterly direction. It is crossed a few kilometers southeast of Ruta 24 , which runs in a north-south direction.
history
The place was founded in 1875 under the name "Berlín" by the brothers Richard and Karl Wendelstadt, who at that time owned the Nueva Mehlem estate on the Uruguayan River. In 2010 the place became a municipality with its own administration.
