Jorge Paulo Agostinho Mendes (born January 7, 1966 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese players agent . He is the founder and owner of the player agency Gestifute based in Porto and the Portuguese Football Association when FIFA made the official players' agent. Mendes is reported to have brokered more than £ 1bn in player transfers and is described as the most powerful player in the world.

Mendes is particularly active in the Portuguese and South American markets, where he has had a unique position in terms of influence and size since the turn of the millennium. Players and trainers like Diego Costa , Yacine Brahimi , José Mourinho , Luiz Felipe Scolari , Carlos Queiroz , Simão , Anderson , Fábio Coentrão , Pepe , Ángel Di María , Cristiano Ronaldo , Falcao , Ricardo Carvalho , Nani , Ricardo Quaresma , Burak Yılmaz , João Moutinho , James , David de Gea and Víctor Valdés are among his customer base. Mendes is often referred to as a "super agent".

Career

Mendes wanted to start his own football career but was turned down by a number of Portuguese clubs in his early twenties. Instead, he ran a video store , worked as a DJ and opened a bar and nightclub in Caminha , in northern Portugal. There he met the goalkeeper friend Nuno Espírito Santo and referred him from Vitória Guimarães to the Spanish first division club Deportivo La Coruña . This was his first big deal. Other Portuguese and Spanish footballers started visiting him at the nightclub and Mendes started negotiating their transfers.

He won since the first ceremony in 2010 every year, the trophy of the best agents in the international football forum Globe Soccer conferred Globe Soccer Award . In particular, the career of start trainer José Mourinho , who calls Mendes the best agent in the world, is representative of the consultant's success. But unscrupulous business practices and the disregard of norms and rules in the consulting business for one's own advantage and against the interests of his competitors earned Mendes the name of probably the most powerful man in football.

According to Football Leaks revelations, Mendes and the former Manchester United boss Peter Kenyon are managing a fund that has been involved in the transfer rights of football professionals for years and in particular participated in the lucrative player sales of Atletico Madrid. In 2014 and 2016 the Champions League final was Real versus Atlético. Mendes advised several important Real Real players directly, and he earned money from some of Atlético's. The latest model by the Portuguese and his consultancy Gestifute is a kind of all- round package in which business partners or friends of Mendes buy up entire clubs and then supply players and coaches from the agent's portfolio. This is what happened to the glorious Valencia CF in Spain or the Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English second division.

Allegations of foreign ownership

The English newspaper The Guardian has published on 22 September 2014 investigation into certain activities of Jorge Mendes, adjacent to the well of the ex- Manchester United and FC Chelsea -Geschäftsführer Peter Kenyon against the FIFA -Reglement, regarding third-party ownership (transfer rights of players at Investors) and thus conflicts of interest arise when looking after the players. This is an opaque network of funds, which are based in the tax havens of Jersey and Ireland and are involved in player rights. Due to numerous criticisms of such investor models, these so-called “third party ownership” (ownership shares of third parties in players) have been banned by FIFA since May 2015.
