Fábio Alexandre da Silva Coentrão (born March 11, 1988 in Vila do Conde ) is a former Portuguese football player .

Career

Emerging from the youth of Rio Ave FC , Coentrão was already 16 years old to the professional team, which was represented in the first division . After three seasons - 2005/06 and 2006/07 in the 2nd division - he was signed for the 2007/08 season by Benfica Lisbon, one of many top European clubs such as Real Madrid , Manchester United , Chelsea , which he is watched by talent scouts let. Disregarded in competitive games, he was initially loaned to the Madeiran league rivals Nacional Funchal , played for the Spanish second division Real Saragossa until December 31, 2008 and from January 1, 2009 (until the end of the season) for the first division promoted Rio Ave.

At the end of the season he won the Royal Spanish championship. In the following three seasons he remained mostly a reservist due to performance and injury. However, he played an important role in the 2013/14 season, in which he was in the starting line-up under coach Carlo Ancelotti in both quarter and semi-finals and in the final of the Champions League and contributed to winning the title. He was also in the Madrid starting line-up of the Spanish Cup final in that season , in which FC Barcelona were defeated 2-1.

In the 2015/16 season Coentrão played on loan for AS Monaco in the French Ligue 1 . He returned to Real Madrid for the 2016/17 season and again won the Spanish championship and Champions League. With only six competitive matches, however, his share in these successes was small. In the 2017/18 season Coentrão played again on loan for Sporting Lisbon and won the Portuguese League Cup .

At the end of August 2018, Coentrão returned to Rio Ave FC . His contract, which expired after the 2018/19 season , was not extended. After a move to the Greek club PAOK Thessaloniki failed, Coentrão was looking for a club. On January 29, 2020, he announced the end of his career.

National team

Experienced through appearances in the U-20 national team, Coentrão took part in the Junior World Cup in 2007 , was used three times and was eliminated with the U-20 national team in the round of 16 against Chile. On November 14, 2009 he made his debut in the senior national team , which won 1-0 over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the World Cup relegation first leg in Lisbon .

At the subsequent World Cup, he was on the pitch in all of the Portuguese national team's games without missing a single minute. However, due to a 1-0 defeat against Spain , he was eliminated with his team in the round of 16.

At the European Championship 2012 Coentrão was one of the top performers in the Portuguese team. He played all of his team's tournament games and made a significant contribution to the fact that Portugal surprisingly reached the semi-finals. He was then accepted into the team of the tournament .

In the 2007 World Soccer Magazine published list of the 50 greatest soccer talents, in which Coentrão finished 19th, he left players like Toni Kroos , Mesut Özil and Theo Walcott behind.
