Career
society
Ricardo Carvalho started his career at Amarante Futebol Clube , where he played from 1990 to 1996. He then moved to the FC Porto junior team . Carvalho played his first professional season in the 1997/98 season when he was loaned to Leça FC . After further stints at Vitória Setúbal and FC Alverca , he finally returned to his home club, FC Porto, in the 2001/02 season , where he will now establish himself as the successor to Jorge Costa who had migrated to Charlton Athletic and with his team all national titles as well as the Won the UEFA Cup and the Champions League . For his achievements, he was named Portugal Footballer of the Year in 2003 and UEFA Defender of the Year in 2004.
In 2004 he succeeded his coach José Mourinho and moved to Chelsea for a fee of 30 million euros . In the Premier League he quickly developed into a permanent fixture in Chelsea's defensive stronghold, completed 135 league games in the following six years and won the championship and the cup three times with the Blues .
In 2010, Carvalho followed coach José Mourinho's call again and moved to Real Madrid for eight million euros . In the 2010/11 season Carvalho was a regular in central defense and played 33 league games. The 2011/12 season he started also as a set center-back, to him a lengthy back injury stopped. Until the end of the season, which Real Madrid finished as champions, he only played eight league games. In the 2012/13 season , Carvalho only made nine league appearances and did not get beyond the role of supplementary player. His contract, which expired at the end of the season, was not extended.
For the 2013/14 season Carvalho moved to the French Ligue 1 for AS Monaco . He signed a contract with the promoted team for a season with an option for another year. After the 2015/16 season , Carvalho and AS Monaco let the contract expire.
After six months without a club, Carvalho signed a contract with the Chinese first division club Shanghai SIPG at the beginning of January 2017 .
National team
On October 11, 2003, Carvalho played his first international match in the Portuguese jersey . In the 5-3 win over Albania, the defender was substituted on for team-mate Jorge Andrade at halftime . At the 2004 European Championships in his own country, he was runner-up with Portugal. He also took part in the 2006 World Cup and was appointed to the 23-person All-Star Team by FIFA . He also took part in the 2008 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa .
During the qualification for the European Championship 2012 , Carvalho unexpectedly left the training camp of the national team on August 31, 2011, a few days before the away game in Cyprus . The reason for this was that Carvalho should not be in the starting line-up in this game, which injured his honor and resigned from the national team. National coach Paulo Bento then called him a " deserter " and announced that Carvalho would no longer play for the national team under him. Carvalho then referred to Bento as a “ mercenary ” and stated in a TV interview that he would consider returning to the national team at a later date and under a different national coach. On September 14, 2011 Carvalho was excluded from the national team for one year by the Portuguese Association .
After Paulo Bento was sacked in September 2014 and replaced by Fernando Santos , the then 36-year-old Carvalho was called back to the national team almost three years after his suspension. As a result, Carvalho took part in the European Championship again in 2016 as the oldest player in the squad and was used in all group matches. Portugal subsequently reached the final and won the European championship for the first time. Subsequently, Carvalho ended his national team career.
