William Silva de Carvalho (born April 7, 1992 in Luanda , Angola ) is a Portuguese football player .
Career
In the club
William Carvalho was born in Angola and moved to Portugal with his family as a child. In 2005 he was accepted into the youth division of Sporting Lisbon . On April 3, 2011, he made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Vitória Guimarães shortly before the end of the game as a substitute in the Primeira Liga . In the first half of the 2011/12 season Carvalho played on loan for the then third division CD Fátima , and in January 2012 another loan deal took him to the Belgian first division Cercle Bruges , which was limited to one and a half years. With the Belgians Carvalho established himself as a regular player. At the end of the 2012/13 season he just kept the class with the club.
For the 2013/14 season Carvalho returned to Sporting Lisbon. There he became a regular player. He came in the following five years in 142 league games in which he scored ten goals. He won the cup in the 2014/15 season and league cup winner in the 2017/18 season . After Sporting Lisbon failed to qualify for the Champions League in May 2018 , the club's training grounds and dressing room were stormed by violent supporters. His team-mate Bas Dost suffered a head injury. As a result, Carvalho - alongside coach Jorge Jesus , Bruno Fernandes , Gelson Martins , Rui Patrício , Daniel Podence and Bas Dost - canceled his contract at the end of the season because there were "valid motives" for a unilateral contract termination.
For the 2018/19 season Carvalho moved to the Spanish Primera División at Betis Sevilla . He signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2023.
In the national team
Carvalho went through the Portuguese national youth teams. On November 19, 2013, he made his debut in the play-off second leg for World Cup qualification against Sweden under national coach Paulo Bento in the senior team . At the U21 European Championship in 2015 , he finished second with Portugal and was voted player of the tournament .
At the European Championships in France in 2016 , he was included in the Portuguese squad. From the second game against Austria he was part of the starting eleven, but had to pause in the semifinals because of his second yellow card. The team reached the final and won 1-0 in extra time against hosts France. This was the first time Portugal were European champions.
He then took part as a regular in the 2018 World Cup, when Portugal was eliminated by Uruguay in the round of 16.
