Eduardo (born September 19, 1982 in Mirandela , Portugal ; fully Eduardo dos Reis Carvalho ) is a former Portuguese goalkeeper . He was a regular goalkeeper for the Portuguese national team between 2009 and 2011 .

Career

societies

Eduardo initially stayed as an active club player for four years with his youth club Sporting Braga . In the winter break of the 2006/07 season he was loaned from SC Beira-Mar , whereupon he completed the second half of the season as a regular goalkeeper and booked the first 15 appearances in the Primeira Liga .

In the following season , another loan deal led him to Vitória Setúbal . There, as a regular goalkeeper, he made a decisive contribution to the league cup win and equally important to qualifying for the UEFA Cup : In the league cup final against Sporting Lisbon he made three attempts on penalties .

For the 2008/09 season Eduardo returned to Sporting Braga. His first competitive games for Braga were the final games of the UEFA Intertoto Cup in July 2008, through which the club qualified for the 2008/09 UEFA Cup . From then on, also set as a regular goalkeeper at Braga, Eduardo did not miss a single league encounter in the following two years. By finishing second in the 2009/10 season , Eduardo managed to qualify for the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League with the club .

For the 2010/11 season , Eduardo moved to Serie A for CFC Genoa for a fee of 4.5 million euros plus 25 percent of the transfer rights . He signed a four-year contract valid until June 2014. After 37 appearances in the first year, Eduardo returned to Portugal on loan for the 2011/12 season to keep the goal at Benfica Lisbon . Artur Moraes , who was also signed by Benfica at the beginning of the season, decided the fight for the regular place in goal in the end for himself, so that Eduardo only played one league. He also received playing times in the Cup and League Cup, where he won the latter with Benfica.

For the 2012/13 season Eduardo joined the Turkish first division club Istanbul BB . There he met his former coach Carlos Carvalhal , who had already coached him in 2007/08. Eduardo was used in 33 of 34 league games, but rose with the club as third bottom in the league.

For the 2013/14 season he returned to Braga, where he immediately became a regular goalkeeper again. The club had secured participation in qualifying for the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League in fourth place in the preseason , but this was missed in the play-offs against Pandurii Târgu Jiu . In the league, Eduardo remained clean five times in 29 games, after which Braga ended up in a disappointing eighth place, which did not qualify for participation in a European competition. In the cup came the end in the semifinals against Rio Ave FC .

For the 2014/15 season he moved to the reigning Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb . He made his debut on July 11, 2014 as part of a 2-1 defeat in the Supercup against HNK Rijeka . In the league he was used in 34 of 36 games and remained without conceding 18 times. In the end he was able to celebrate his first championship. In the cup, whose final Dinamo won on penalties against RNK Split , Eduardo was not used. In the next season he was able to defend both championship and cup with Dinamo, where he was not used in the cup again. He reached the group stage with Dinamo in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League .

In August 2016 he moved to England for Chelsea . In the 2018/19 season he played on loan for Vitesse Arnheim . He was then signed to Sporting Braga for a year before retiring.

National team

Eduardo was in goal in two games for the U-21 team at a tournament in Sweden in May 2008. He made his senior national team debut on February 11, 2009 in a friendly against Finland under coach Carlos Queiroz , who took over after the 2008 European Championship . He was used in the first 60 minutes and did not concede a goal. Then he was replaced by Daniel Fernandes , who played his second and last international match. From then on, Eduardo was the regular goalkeeper, replacing Quim , who in turn had inherited the longstanding goalkeeper Ricardo after the 2008 European Championship. Eduardo was used 26 times in the next 28 games, including all qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup and the World Cup finals in South Africa , in which the Portuguese were eliminated 0-1 in the round of 16 against eventual world champions Spain . Also in the qualification for the Euro 2012 , which began after the European Championship under the new coach Paulo Bento , he was initially in goal, but then lost his regular place to Rui Patrício in August 2011 and was only used sporadically in friendly games from then on. He was then also in the squad for the Euro 2012 and World Cup 2014 , but was only substituted for Beto in the last World Cup game against Ghana , which the Portuguese won 2-1 , who replaced Rui Patrício in the first group game after his injury. Since the Portuguese had the worse goal difference compared to the US boys due to the 4-0 opening defeat against eventual world champions Germany and thus the early elimination was certain, Eduardo came on a one-minute short assignment. This was his last assignment so far, because even under the new coach Fernando Santos , who had replaced Bento in October 2010, he was no longer used although he was regularly nominated for the squad. Nevertheless, he was accepted by Santos as the second substitute goalkeeper in the Portuguese squad for the 2016 European Championship in France. In the tournament he was not used again. Portugal reached the final and became European champions with a 1-0 win after extra time over France.
