UEFA Intertoto Cup 2008

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Standard division of the clubs into three groups. In the 2008 season there are four deviations from this breakdown.

For the UEFA Intertoto Cup 2008 , 50 UEFA member associations were each allowed to send a soccer team into the competition. In three rounds, eleven places were played for the second qualifying round of the 2008/09 UEFA Cup . The teams of the associations, which occupied the top places in the UEFA five-year ranking, only entered the competition later (places 9 to 22 - from the 2nd round, places 1 to 8 - from the 3rd round).

In order to keep travel costs down for the clubs, all teams have been divided into three groups according to geographical and logistical reasons: Northern Europe, Central Europe and Southern Europe. The representatives from the Asian countries Azerbaijan , Armenia , Kazakhstan and Georgia were assigned to the Central Europe group, as were the Eastern European teams from Belarus and Moldova or from the second round on Russia and Ukraine , and Romania from the third round. The Swiss representative , like the Israeli team, joined the Southern Europe group (2nd round) and the Dutch representative joined the Northern Europe group (3rd round).

This year's events were the last of the Intertoto competition. From 2009 the UI-Cup was included in the qualification of the UEFA Cup, which was transformed into the UEFA Europa League .
