history

Football was played in the town of Rhyl as early as the late 1870s. Founded in 1883, Rhyl Football Club became a founding member of the Welsh League in 1890. After the first season, the club withdrew its team. In 1893 the club returned as Rhyl Athletic and became a member of the North Wales Coast League. Two years later, the club won the championship in this league. In 1898 the club merged with Rhyl Town and switched to the Anglo-Welsh Combination. Despite financial problems, they remained a member of this division until the league was dissolved in 1911. As Rhyl United, the club returned to the North Wales Coast League.

After the First World War, the club moved to the North Wales Alliance. In 1921 the club became a founding member of the Welsh National League (North), which was won in 1926. In 1928 the name was changed to Rhyl Athletic. In 1936 the club was accepted into the Cheshire League and after the end of World War II one of the most successful chapters in the club's history began. 1948 and 1951 Rhyl was champion of this league. In 1952 and 1953 Rhyl was twice in a row Welsh Cup winners. In 1972 the club won the third championship of the Cheshire League. After the Cheshire League ended, Rhyl became a member of the North West Counties League. The club later made it to the Northern Premier League.

In 1992 the club returned to Wales. Since the application for the League of Wales was too late, Rhyl was divided into the Cymru Alliance. In 1994 the club finally made it to the League of Wales. In the first few years, the club struggled against relegation before a consortium led by ex-player Peter Parry took over the business. In 2004, Rhyl became Welsh champion for the first time and won the triple by winning the cup and league cup . In the first qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League they were eliminated against the Latvian champions Skonto Riga . In the following season Rhyl was runner-up and thus managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup . In the first qualifying round you eliminated the Lithuanian representative Atlantas Klaipėda . In round two came the end against Viking Stavanger from Norway . In the championship they finished third and again managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup, where they were eliminated in the first round against the Lithuanians from FK Süduva .

Like all clubs in the Welsh Premier League , Rhyl FC's players are semi-professionals. Only The New Saints FC and AFC Llanelli are full professionals.

After the 2009/10 season, in which Rhyl had finished the season in sixth final rank and would have secured relegation for the 2010/11 season reduction of the league to twelve teams, the club was denied the license due to financial difficulties and subsequently classified in the second highest division, the Cymru Alliance . From there they managed to get promoted back to the Welsh Premier League in the 2012/13 season , from which Rhyl was relegated in 2017.
