The 2008 Virslīga was the 17th season of the highest Latvian men's football league since it was founded in 1992. Officially, the league is called LMT Virslīga (Latvijas Mobilais Telefons Virslīga) and is hosted by the Latvian Football Association . The season started on April 1, 2008 and ended on November 9, 2008.
The FK Ventspils was able to successfully defend the title from last year and was the third time in the club's history Latvian champions.
The league was held in 2008 for the first time after the Virslīga 1996 with ten teams. The climbers from the 1st līga were FK Vindava Ventspils and SK Blāzma . The championship was initially played in a regular season in a round game. Each team competed twice against each other team. After 18 games in which all teams competed against each other twice, the league was divided into two groups with the six best and four poorer teams.
Then the teams of the respective groups played twice (championship round) or four times against each other (relegation round). The first table of the championship round was thus Latvian football champions. The bottom of the table in the relegation round JFK Olimps was relegated directly to the 1st league, the table penultimate SK Blāzma played in the relegation against the runner-up from the second-class 1st league, FC Tranzit, and won them 5-1 and 1-0.
