The 1997 Virslīga was the sixth season of the highest Latvian football league, since it was founded in 1992. It was played by the Latvian Football Association . The season began on April 12, 1997 and ended on November 8, 1997.
Skonto Riga became Latvian champions for the sixth time in a row.
After FK Starts Brocēni withdrew before the start of the season, nine clubs started the season with promoted FK Ventspils and relegation winner FK Valmiera . They played against each other three times and played a total of 24 season games. Instead of bottom of the table, two clubs left the league at the end of the season with FK Lokomotīve Daugavpils (dissolution) and FK Universitāte Riga (withdrawal).
