Futbola klubs Torpedo Riga was a Latvian football club from the capital Riga .

history

In his 1979 Latvian league debut season, Torpedo won 13 of 26 games and finished the season fourth out of fourteen teams. The following years were less successful, but in the mid-1980s came with coach Arkādijs Perkins the breakthrough. The first sign of this came in 1982 when Torpedo reached the Latvian Cup final. Even so, it came quite unexpectedly when Torpedo won the Latvian League in 1984. In 1986 the club won another league title, with players like Jurijs Andrejevs and Einārs Gņedojs in the squad. A year later the success could be repeated. In 1989 they won the Latvian Cup by defeating Celtnieks Daugavpils 1-0 in the final.

In the first season of the independent Virslīga Torpedo had to be content with eighth place out of twelve clubs. After the 1992 season, the club played under the name Vidus Riga for two years .

In 1994 a new sponsor came. From then on, the association was called Amstrig Riga . Several players were signed under the new name: Andrejs Piedels , Vladimir's Draguns, Vits Rimkus , Rihards Butkus and Gints Gilis. The main newcomer to Amstrig in 1995 was Mihails Miholaps , who scored eleven goals. The 1995 season ended in fifth place. The sponsor jumped off, and with Daugava Rīga the name was changed again.

In 1996 Daugava surprisingly came second in the Virslīga behind Skonto Riga. That was mainly the result of Mihails Miholaps, who was the top scorer this season with 33 goals. Daugava had thus qualified for the UEFA Cup . A year later, Daugava was unlikely to repeat the results of the previous year as the club ran into serious financial difficulties, some of which were resolved by the sale of Mihail's Miholaps to Skonto Riga. As in the previous year, the team finished second, but the results in the UEFA Cup were less successful. Daugava was eliminated in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup against Vorskla Poltava .

At the end of the 1998 season, the club was on the verge of bankruptcy. The club was renamed LU / Daugava Rīga and returned to the Virslīga after a year in the second division. However, only 2 of 28 games were won in this 2000 season. Then they merged with Policijas Riga.
