The UEFA Cup 1998/99 was the 28th edition of the competition and was the AC Parma won after the Italians the French club Olympique Marseille in the final at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow with 3: could defeat 0th It was the club's second UEFA Cup victory since 1995 .
German participants were FC Schalke 04 (eliminated in the first round), Bayer 04 Leverkusen , VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen (all second round). SK Rapid Wien (1st round) and the Grazer AK (2nd round) started for Austria , Switzerland was represented by Servette Geneva (1st round) as well as Grasshopper Club Zurich and FC Zurich (both 3rd round) .

All clubs that had occupied one of the UEFA Cup places regulated by the UEFA five-year ranking at the end of last season were eligible to participate ; the remaining participants were played in two qualifying rounds. The competition was played in six rounds in two legs. In the case of a tie, the number of goals scored away was decided first , then an overtime, if no decision was reached after two 15 minutes, a penalty shoot-out followed until the winner was determined. As in the previous year, three clubs were able to qualify for the first round via the UEFA Intertoto Cup .
