Mario Stanić (born April 10, 1972 in Sarajevo , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian football player .

life and career

society

The midfielder began his career at FK Željezničar Sarajevo in 1988. Stanić was considered one of the greatest Yugoslav talents at the time. In 1992, when the Bosnian War began, he moved to Dinamo Zagreb , where he only played for a year. The first stop outside the former Yugoslavia was Sporting Gijón in Spain for a year. Then there was another year with Benfica Lisbon in Portugal , two years with FC Bruges in Belgium , three years with AC Parma in Italy and four years with FC Chelsea in England . So Stanić played in seven different European countries.

His greatest successes at club level were once Croatian champions with Dinamo Zagreb in 1993, once Belgian champions , cup winners and Supercup winners with Club Bruges (all 1996), once UEFA Cup winners (1999) with AC Parma and once with the Italian Cup and Supercup with this club (both 1999).

In 2004 he ended his career due to persistent knee problems .

National team

Internationally, Mario Stanić played twice for the Yugoslav national football team in October 1991 . He was allowed to play 49 times for Croatia and scored seven goals. Stanić made his debut for Croatia on September 3, 1995 against Estonia . The midfielder took part in the 1996 European Football Championship in England (three appearances), in the 1998 World Cup in France (seven appearances), where Croatia won the bronze medal, and in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea (two appearances) .

Stanić also scored the first ever goal by a Croatian team in a World Cup when he scored 1-0 in a 3-1 win over Jamaica . The Croatian made the last game for his home country on April 30, 2003 in a friendly against Sweden .
