Alberto Malesani (born June 5, 1954 in Verona ) is a former Italian football player and current coach .
Player career
Alberto Malesani never got beyond the 3rd division as a soccer player. He started with Audace San Michele and played briefly for Lanerossi Vicenza at the age of 16 . With Audace , he rose from Serie D to Serie C in 1977 , but the club could only hold there for one season. The midfielder also worked in Officine Bra , Ambrosiana and Casaleone . In his mid-twenties, Malesani ended his playing career and worked for the camera manufacturer Canon .
Coaching career
For Canon he had to travel frequently to the Netherlands , in Amsterdam he watched the training work at Ajax Amsterdam . In the early 1980s he was sports director at the lower class club Olimpia Domiro .
A few years later he became a youth coach at Chievo Verona , from 1991 to 1993 he was assistant coach there . In the 1993/94 season he took over as head coach the first team and went with her from Serie C1 to Serie B on. In the following years, Malesani Chievo led to secure relegation, in 1996/97 the team even finished seventh. Malesani moved to Fiorentina in Serie A, with whom he finished fifth. From 1998 to 2001, Malesani was a coach at AC Parma , with whom he was Italian Cup winner , Italian Super Cup winner and UEFA Cup winner. In 2001 he was released.
He then worked at Hellas Verona , but the team rose to Serie B, in 2002/03 they were only 13th in the second-highest Italian division. In 2003/04 Malesani was in charge of the Modena FC team , and the collaboration with him was ended prematurely in March 2004.
In February 2005 he took over the Greek top club Panathinaikos Athens , with whom he was runner-up in 2005 and third in 2006. After Malesani missed the Champions League qualification, he decided not to extend his contract and gave private reasons. From January 2007 he was Udinese's coach before joining FC Empoli in November of the same year . There he was released in March 2008 and replaced by his predecessor Luigi Cagni . From November 23, 2009, he was tasked with staying up in Siena , but rose with the club at the end of the season in Serie B and was then removed from his office.
On September 1, 2010, he took over the position of head coach at FC Bologna after his predecessor Franco Colomba had been fired before the start of the season. For the 2011/12 season he took over the coaching position at CFC Genoa , but was dismissed in December 2011. In March 2012, CFC Genoa brought Malesani back as coach. On April 23, 2012 he was released again after a 1: 4 defeat against AC Siena .
On February 5, 2013 Malesani took over the first division eleven from US Palermo . After three draws in three games, Malesani was released on February 25, 2013. On January 29, 2014, the relegation-threatened first division club Sassuolo Calcio signed him as the successor to Eusebio Di Francesco .
