The 1996 Virslīga was the fifth season of the highest Latvian football league, since it was founded in 1992. It was hosted by the Latvian Football Association . The season began on April 20, 1996 and ended on October 30, 1996.
Skonto Riga became Latvian champions for the fifth time in a row.
The league was played with ten teams. Promoted from the 1. Liga was the FK Jurnieks . The teams first played against each other twice in a regular season in the round two; once at home and once away. Thus, each team initially played 18 games.
After this phase, the league was divided into two groups with the six best and four poorer teams. Then the teams of the respective groups played twice (championship round) or four times against each other (relegation round). The table top of the championship round was thus Latvian football champions. The bottom of the table of the relegation round FK Jūrnieks rose directly from the 1st league, the table penultimate FK Skonto / Metāls played in the relegation against the runner-up from the second-class 1st league of FK Valmiera .
From this season onwards there were three points for a win and one point for a draw.
