Brocēni (German Brotzen or Berghof-Brotzen ) is a city in western Latvia with 3134 inhabitants (2018).
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1528. The nearby Ciecere Lake contains rich deposits of limestone , which is why a cement works and a factory for artificial slate were built here in 1937/1938 . With the settlement of workers, the place grew quickly.
During the Second World War , the German occupiers built a concentration camp next to the factory .
During the Soviet era, the individual factories were combined to form a large combine . After Latvia joined the EU , the production of fiber cement corrugated sheets was discontinued.
Brocēni received city rights in 1992.
Brocēnu novads
Brocēni County was established in 2001. In 2009, four more congregations joined. The population is 6245 (as of July 1, 2018).
