Vitālijs Astafjevs (born April 3, 1971 in Riga ; Russian Виталий Астафьев , Vitalij Astafjew ) is a former Latvian football player and former captain of the Latvian national team and their record player. Until 2017 he was also the record international player in Europe.

Career

He started his career at Skonto Riga. From there he moved to FK Austria Wien in the 1996/97 season , where he only stayed one season before going back to Skonto Riga. From 1999 he played for Bristol Rovers for four years , from then on to Admira Wacker , Rubin Kazan , Olimps Riga , FK Ventspils and is currently playing again for Skonto FC .

He played his first international match on August 26, 1992 against Denmark in World Cup qualification (0-0), and scored his first goal for the national team on July 2, 1993 at the Baltic Cup against Estonia (final score 2-0). With the national team he celebrated his greatest success so far in 2004, when the Baltic team was able to qualify for a European football championship for the first time , where it was used in three games against the Czech Republic , Germany and the Netherlands . He mostly plays on the left side of defense or in the left midfield.

On October 9, 1999, he set the pre-war record of Ēriks Pētersons , who had come to 63 games between 1929 and 1939 and outbid him on February 2, 2000 with his 64th game. Since then he has been the sole record player for the Latvian national team. He made his 150th game on November 12, 2008 against Estonia (final score 1: 1). In these missions he scored 16 goals. On October 14, 2009 he set the European record of Martin Reim with his 157th game in the game against Moldova and surpassed him on November 14, 2009 with his 158th game, which was lost 2-1 against Honduras. He was able to expand the record to 167 caps until he played his last game against China on November 17, 2010 . After this game he ended his international career.
