Lisburn Distillery is a Northern Irish football club based in Lisburn and playing in the IFA Championship . The team has always worn white home jerseys. It is one of the oldest official football clubs in Ireland .
history
In July 1879 the club was founded as VR Distillery Cricket Club by members of the Royal Irish Distillery in Belfast . The football department, the Distillery Football Club , was not formed until November 1880. A month later, on December 11, 1880, the first game against Dundela took place on Daisy Hill. It was won 1-0.
During the 1882-83 season, the Whites moved to a larger square near Broadway. On April 19, 1884, the time had come: Distillery won the Irish Cup for the first time , which it successfully defended in the two following years. The highest victory ever succeeded in this cup with an 18-0 victory over United Steamship on October 29, 1887. In 1889, the year they moved to Grosvenor Park, the team won for the first time in County Antrim Shield. Even in the first season of the Irish League it was enough for a good third place. The club became champions for the first time after the 1895/96 season. This year the triple was made perfect with the Irish Cup and the County Antrim Shield .
In the 1905/06 season the club finished the Irish Premier League tied with Cliftonville FC in first place. The playoff set by the IFA ended in a draw after extra time. It was hoped that a replay would produce a winner, but this also resulted in a draw after the extra time. So the association decided that these really equally strong teams should both receive the cup.
City Cup and Gold Cup victories also followed later in history. From 1922/23 to 1927/28 the club played in York Park before returning to Grosvenor Park. The club even managed a novelty: in the 1952/53 season the first floodlight system was installed in all of Irish football.
Five years later (1957) the Ulster Cup was won for the first time. One of the club's greatest successes was in 1963/64, when the team beat Benfica Lisbon 3: 3 in the first leg of the first round of the European Cup . In the second leg, however, it had to be beaten 5-0. In 1971/72 the second big match against FC Barcelona was played in the European Cup Winners' Cup . But there was a quick end with 1: 3 and 0: 4.
In 1971, Grosvenor Park was destroyed in a fire. In the following decade, the club changed the stadium several times, until they finally settled in 1980 in the suburb of Ballyskeagh, where the New Grosvenor Stadium was built. A phoenix was added to the coat of arms to mark this “resurrection” . In 1995/96, however, he was relegated to the First Division . Three years later, the rise succeeded. In the same year (1999) the name was officially changed to Lisburn Distillery FC and the city's coat of arms was added to the emblem. With the new name, it went straight back to the First Division. While the Whites failed to gain promotion in the play-off in 2001 , the team returned to the top division in the following year, in which the club played until 2013. Then the club was the last to be relegated to the IFA Premiership and has only played second class since the 2013/14 season.
