The NIFL Championship is the second highest division in professional football in Northern Ireland . The game was played in two groups until 2015/16, all of which are playing for promotion to the top division, the NIFL Premiership . As of 2016, the two groups will be reorganized, with Championship 1 remaining the second highest class, while Championship 2 will be converted to Premier Intermediate League as the third highest class.
history
The NIFL Championship was founded in 1951 as Irish Division B and has been played regularly ever since. Since the 1971/72 season, promotion has been played in two groups, which are divided into north and south. From the 2016/17 season, the two groups were abolished and a uniform league with twelve clubs was played.
