Newry City FC was a Northern Irish football club that played in the IFA Premiership for a long time . The club, founded in 1923, came from Newry and played its home games in the Showgrounds. The club colors were blue and white.

history

The club was originally called Newry Town , but it was renamed Newry City in 2004, when Newry City had already had city rights for 2 years.

The most successful period for the club was the late 1990s. After they won the First Division in the 1997/98 season and were fourth in the Premier Division , they qualified for the Intertoto Cup . In this Intertoto Cup, which was the club's first appearance on the European stage, Newry City played against the Croatian club Hrvatski Dragovoljac and lost 1-0. But in the second leg the Northern Irish managed a 2-0 victory and thus made it into the second round. In the second round, Newry City met German Bundesliga club MSV Duisburg . There, however, they lost 2-0. In their home game they won 1-0, but that was not enough to go one round.

The 2002/03 season ended the team in last place. But by relegation they were able to secure relegation against Bangor FC .

In the 2010/11 season Newry was relegated last to the second division. A year later they reached the relegation games to the IFA Premiership in second place , but lost to Lisburn Distillery 0-0 and 2-3.

The association was dissolved in 2012. A short time later, a new club was founded in Newry with the Newry City AFC .
