Dyego Wilverson Ferreira Sousa (born September 14, 1989 in São Luís , Brazil ) is a Brazilian - Portuguese football player .

Career

In the club

Born in Brazil, Dyego Sousa first played for clubs in his home country before moving to Europe in 2010 and signing a contract with the Portuguese second division club Leixões SC . After just one season he moved to Angola and played for GD Interclube . He then returned to Portugal's second division and came to appearances for CD Tondela and Portimonense SC .

For the 2014/15 season , Sousa signed a three-year contract with the Portuguese first division club Marítimo Funchal . His breakthrough came in the 2015/16 season , when he was one of the ten best attackers in the league with twelve goals and contributed to the cup final, which was lost 6-2 to Benfica Lisbon .

For the 2017/18 season , Sousa was signed by Sporting Braga and signed a four-year contract. There he scored 23 goals in 51 league games and also took part in the Europa League .

In July 2019 he moved to the Chinese first division promoted FC Shenzhen . In January 2020 he was loaned to Benfica Lisbon .

In the national team

In March 2019, the naturalized Sousa was appointed to the squad of the Portuguese national team for the first time by national coach Fernando Santos . He then made his international debut in a goalless European Championship qualifier against Ukraine on March 22, 2019 . Three days later he played his last game for the time being in the same campaign against Serbia (1-1). In the two final round matches of the UEFA Nations League at the beginning of June, he was in the squad, but was not used. He has not been nominated since then.
