Carlos Augusto Soares da Costa Faria Carvalhal short Carlos Carvalhal (born December 4, 1965 in Braga ) is a Portuguese football coach and former football player .
Player career
Carlos Carvalhal, born in Braga in 1965, started his career with Sporting Braga in his hometown . Another station was FC Porto , for whom he played for a year. In total, Carvahal completed 259 games and scored one goal.
Coaching career
Carvalhal began his coaching career at SC Espinho in the 2nd division, but was sacked after a year and a half. He moved to the coaching chair of Belenenses Lisbon . After five defeats in eight games, the club separated from him again in 2006. Further, short positions as a trainer followed. In August 2011 Carvahal moved to Turkey to Beşiktaş Istanbul . On April 2, Beşiktaş separated from Carvalhal.
For the new season he returned to the Turkish Süper Lig and was introduced as the new coach of Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor . He replaced the old trainer Arif Erdem . After a disappointing season, he announced his retirement after the 11th match day. Just a few days after this resignation, he was replaced by the Turkish coach Bülent Korkmaz .
With Sheffield Wednesday Carvalhal managed a 3-0 home win against Arsenal in the round of 16 of the League Cup 2015/16 . Carvalhal led Sheffield to the promotion play-offs twice, in 2016 they failed in the final 1-0 to Hull City , in 2017 the team was eliminated in the semifinals on penalties against Huddersfield Town . After a 2-1 defeat by Middlesbrough FC , his contract was terminated by mutual agreement on December 24, 2017. His coaching colleague from Middlesbrough FC, Garry Monk , was also sacked after this game.
On December 28, 2017, Carvalhal was introduced as Swansea City's new head coach . His contract runs with an option to extend until the end of the season. Carvalhal failed to lead the club out of the relegation zone and the club was relegated at the end of the season as third-bottom from the Premier League. As a result, he was not offered a new contract.
