Garry Alan Monk (born March 6, 1979 in Bedford ) is a former English football player and current coach .

Early career

Garry Monk began his career at Torquay United where he made five appearances in the 1995/96 season. At the end of the season he moved to Southampton FC . With the Saints he signed his first professional contract in 1997. Since he could never really gain a foothold in Southampton, he was loaned to other English clubs five times between 1998 and 2004. His stations have been Oxford United , Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley FC . The latter signed Monk in February 2004 on a free transfer.

Swansea City

In the summer of 2004 he left Barnsley again and joined the Welsh club Swansea City . In the 2006/07 season he tore a cruciate ligament after two games this season , which left him out for a long time and made the board think about his contractual future.

As captain of the swans , he returned for the 2007/08 season and helped the club to rise to the English second division. For the 2008/09 season he got a new partner for central defense in Ashley Williams and formed with him a secure support for the team this season.

On February 6, 2013 Monk signed a new contract with Swansea, which binds him to the club until June 2015.

Later that month Monk won the first major title of his career as Swansea, under coach Michael Laudrup , beat Bradford City 5-0 in the 2013 League Cup final at Wembley .

After only making 15 appearances in the 2012/13 season, he said that "the time has come" to cede the captaincy to another player. Ashley Williams has since wore the armband.

Trainer

After Michael Laudrup's dismissal, Monk was appointed interim coach on February 4, 2014. However, he was still eligible to play for the swans at this point. His first game on the bench was the Wales derby against Cardiff City , which Swansea won 3-0. On May 7, 2014, he was appointed the new head coach and signed a three-year contract. He was released on December 9, 2015.

On June 2, 2016, Garry Monk was introduced as head coach of Leeds United , after one season he resigned from his post. A little later he took over the coaching position at second division rivals FC Middlesbrough , but was dismissed on December 23, 2017 after a 2-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday in 9th place in the table. The contract of his colleague from Sheffield Wednesday, Carlos Carvalhal , was also terminated after this game. On March 4, 2018, Monk was introduced as the successor to Steve Cotterill, who was dismissed the previous day, at the relegation-threatened second division club Birmingham City . Monk's coaching team at Birmingham also includes assistant coach Pep Clotet , with whom Monk had worked at Swansea and Leeds, and goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan , who had worked at Leeds and Middlesbrough under Monk. At the end of the season he successfully led Birmingham to keep the league. In the 2018/19 season, he finished 17th with Birmingham in a secure midfield despite a deduction of nine points at the end of the season. During the summer break of 2019, there was a rift with the club's management and Monk, who was extremely popular with the fans, was released on June 18, 2019.

At the beginning of September 2019, Monk became the new head coach of the second division Sheffield Wednesday , where he succeeds Steve Bruce, who moved to Newcastle United during the break of the season . The previous interim coach Lee Bullen joins Monk's coaching staff.
