Keiren Westwood (born October 23, 1984 in Manchester ) is an Irish football player who has been under contract with Sheffield Wednesday since 2014 .

Player career

Carlisle United (2004-2008)

Keiren Westwood, who came from the youth academy of his hometown club Manchester City , moved to the English fifth division club Carlisle United in 2004 after missing the breakthrough in professional football at City. Carlisle had experienced the lowest point in club history the previous season with relegation from the Football League . After the direct resurgence in 2004/05 Westwood established himself in the fourth division as the new goalkeeper and managed with Carlisle as champions before Northampton Town and Leyton Orient the direct march through to the third-rate Football League One . The promoted team established itself in League One 2006/07 as eighth of the table and improved this result in the 2007/08 season with fourth place. In the first play-off round, however, United failed 2-1 and 0-2 at fifth Leeds United and thus missed promotion to the second division. Westwood was chosen at the end of the season in the PFA Team of the Year of the third division due to his good performance .

Coventry City (2008-2011)

Through his performances in League One Westwood had also noticed higher-class clubs and so took place on June 18, 2008, the change to the second division Coventry City , where he signed a three-year contract. His first season in the Football League Championship in 2008/09 , he finished with his team only in seventeenth place, but for this Westwood was voted PFA Team of the Year for the second time in a row . In the 2009/10 season , the performance deteriorated again and led the club from Coventry to nineteenth place. After another season in the lower third of the table, Westwood did not extend his expiring contract and left the club.

Sunderland AFC (2011–)

On June 22, 2011, Sunderland AFC announced the signing of free transfer Keiren Westwood. After he had to replace the Belgian goalkeeper Simon Mignolet at the beginning of the 2011/12 season on the bench, he made his debut on October 29, 2011 for the injured Belgian in the goal of Sunderland. Even after the dismissal of Steve Bruce , he was able to maintain his place in goal under the new coach Martin O'Neill . After he missed the game against Manchester City on New Year 2012 due to an injury, Mignolet was given preference again for the remainder of the season.

Irish national team (2009–)

Keiren Westwood, who was born in England, was eligible to play for the Irish national team through his Irish grandparents and was nominated for the Irish squad during his time with the English third division club Carlisle United. On May 29, 2009, he made his debut in the friendly against Nigeria for Ireland.

Although Westwood was hardly used before the 2016 European Football Championship and was not in the squad for the immediate preparatory games, he was accepted as the third goalkeeper in Ireland's squad for the European Championship in France due to his good season at the club . He even wore the number 1, but was not used in the tournament.
