Simon Luc Hildebert Mignolet (born March 6, 1988 in Sint-Truiden ) is a Belgian football goalkeeper . He plays for Club Bruges .

Career

societies

Mignolet began his football career in the youth of VV St. Truiden . In 2005 he received a professional contract there and made his debut in a 0-1 defeat against KAA Gent . In the following season Mignolet became a regular player, but rose with his club. In the following season in the EXQI League one rose again; Mignolet scored his first career goal this season: After a 3-0 lead against KSK Ronse , he was urged by fellow players to take a penalty . After he had initially fired this, he hit in the margin.

For the 2010/11 season Mignolet moved to the Premier League for AFC Sunderland . Due to an injury to goalkeeper Craig Gordon , the Belgian made his debut on matchday one against Birmingham City (2-2). Despite Gordon's interim recovery, Mignolet prevailed over the course of the season and ousted the Scot as a regular goalkeeper.

For the 2013/14 season, Mignolet moved to Liverpool for a transfer fee of nine million pounds . In his first league game against Stoke City , he parried a penalty from Jonathan Walters in the 89th minute and secured the 1-0 victory for Liverpool.

In the 2013/14 , 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons Mignolet was used as a regular goalkeeper for Liverpool and only missed a few games. His contract was extended on January 18, 2016 for a further five years until 2021. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , Loris Karius was committed, who initially could not prevail against Mignolet, but was temporarily preferred to Mignolet as the goalkeeper in the second half of the 2017/18 season .

In August 2019 he returned to Belgium and joined Club Bruges, where, subject to medical examination, he signed a five-year contract. Mignolet was there in all 27 league games from his engagement until the end of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, remained in goal in 16 games and only let 13 balls into the goal in the remaining games. For this he was named the best goalkeeper of the 2019/20 season in Division 1A by Pro League . At the same time he was Belgian champion with Club Bruges.

National team

As part of the qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2011 in Sweden , Mignolet made his first appearance in the U-21. After a number of good performances for Sunderland, he was appointed to the national team for the first time on September 1, 2010. He made his first game on March 25, 2011 in a 2-0 win over Austria . Mignolet took part in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with the Belgian national team; there he was the first substitute goalkeeper behind Thibaut Courtois and was not used in any game.

Coach Marc Wilmots also nominated Mignolet as a substitute goalkeeper for the Belgian squad of the European Football Championship 2016 in France, but he was again not used in the tournament. He was also appointed to the squad by national coach Roberto Martínez at the 2018 World Cup in Russia , without actually being used. Mignolet was only actually on the field in several friendlies of the national team.
