David Chidozie Okereke (born August 29, 1997 in Lagos ) is a Nigerian football player who has been under contract with the Belgian first division club Bruges since the 2019/20 season .

Career

David Okereke is a product of the Football College Abuja, an academy that already made it possible for Sadiq Umar and Nura Abdullahi to make the jump to Italy . Okereke joined the Italian fourth division club USD Lavagnese 1919 in September 2015 . He made his debut in the first team on December 6, 2015 in a 3-0 home win against the US Fezzanese , in which he contributed one goal.

On January 6, 2016, the second division team Spezia Calcio secured the services of the young striker . There he only played for the U-19 team for the time being. After reaching the semi-finals with the Primavera at Torneo di Viareggio in March 2016 and scoring five goals in the course of the tournament, Okereke signed his first professional contract with the Aquilotti on March 31 . Okereke made his first-team debut on April 9 in a 1-0 home win in the league against Novara Calcio when he came on for Andrea Catellani in the 84th minute . On the next match day against FC Crotone , he was on the starting line-up for the first time.

In the 3-2 away win against the first division Udinese Calcio in the Coppa Italia 2016/17 on August 13, 2016, David Okereke scored his first competitive goal for Spezia. In the league, however, he only played a sporadic role in the first team and was used in only 14 games in which he was unsuccessful. In the following season 2017/18 his situation at Spezia worsened significantly. After playing in the first five league games after the start of the season and not being able to score a goal there, he only sat on the bench with the exception of a single brief appearance against Ascoli Calcio in October until the end of 2017.

In January 2018, a loan to third division Cosenza Calcio followed , where the striker was supposed to collect match practice. He made his first league appearance on January 21 in a 2-1 home win against Matera Calcio , in which he was able to prepare a goal. His first goal he scored on 14 February at 2: 0 away win against US Lecce in the Coppa Italia Serie C . His first goal in the league was a long time coming in a 5-1 away win against Virtus Francavilla Calcio on April 29 . Cosenza qualified with the 5th place in the table for the play-offs for promotion to the second-class Serie B. There Okereke contributed significantly with three goals and two assists that his loan club finally made the promotion.

After his return, Okereke made his breakthrough at Spezia Calcio in the 2018/19 season . He started the season as a regular in the striker and rewarded the trust of coach Pasquale Marino with his first league goal for the Adler on matchday 7 in the 3-1 away win against AS Livorno . In the 3-1 home win on November 18, he scored twice and prepared the third goal. Two goals against Ascoli Calcio and his former club Cosenza Calcio followed. This season he was able to convince with ten goals and 12 assists.

At the start of the 2019/20 season, Okereke moved to the Belgian first division club FC Brugge , where he signed a four-year contract. The club signed him as the successor to Wesley Moraes, who had migrated to Aston Villa, and paid a transfer fee of eight million euros to Spezia Calcio for his services. He made his debut for the club on July 27 (1st matchday) in a 3-1 away win against Waasland-Beveren , in which he was already able to contribute one goal. The next weekend he scored twice in the Jan Breydel Stadium at home in a 6-0 victory over VV St. Truiden and also prepared a goal. This season he scored nine goals in 22 league games and won the Belgian championship with Bruges.
