Mats Rits (born July 18, 1993 in Antwerp ) is a Belgian football player on the position of midfielder . Since 2018 he has been in the professional squad of Club Bruges with games in Division 1A , the top division in Belgian football .

Career

youth

Rits began his active career as a football player in 1999 in the youth division of the lower class FC Walem from the small village of Walem in the province of Antwerp . There he was active in youth until 2001 and then moved to the youth department of the traditional Belgian club Lierse SK . He went through various youth classes until 2004 and then moved to his hometown to see Germinal Beerschot's offspring, to whom he has been a member since then and was already the captain of several youth teams.

In addition, he is or was in his early youth as one of the greatest young talents who have ever grown up in Belgian football. With good performances he also drew the attention of a number of top European clubs, such as Real Madrid , Ajax Amsterdam , RSC Anderlecht and Manchester United . Between his 15th and 16th birthday, Rits received various offers from major European clubs, but canceled all of them and stayed with his home club. According to some media reports, the young midfielder was about to sign a contract with Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam, before Rits decided against it shortly before graduation and named his family and school as the reason.

Club career

After the young Belgian midfielder decided to stay with Germinal Beerschot, the club's U-19 team was appointed to the professional squad from the 2009/10 season , where he quickly gained a foothold and immediately began to establish himself. Rits made his professional debut in the top Belgian football league at the age of 16 years and 77 days when he came on as a substitute for the injured Colombian Daniel Cruz in a 3-1 home win over KVC Westerlo in the 31st minute on 3 October 2009 . The young Belgian already showed his class in his debut game and scored the goal to make it 1-1 in the 60th minute after an assist by Bart Goor on the same evening . After the team took a 2-1 lead after 89 minutes with a goal from Faris Haroun , the 16-year-old central midfielder went one better and decided the game in the home team's favor in the 90th minute when he scored another goal Assist by Tosin Dosunmu scored. After the good performance with his professional team, Rits was used in five more league games by the end of the season, although he only came to short appearances that lasted a few minutes. Rits also played in the Belgian Cup when he came into play in the 73rd minute in a 3-0 win over KMSK Deinze for the goalscorer to make it 1-0, Sherjill MacDonald .

Although still an essential part of the club's own youth, Rits was also in the squad of the professional team in the 2010/11 season . This season, the young midfielder has made seven goalless league appearances, four appearances in the Europa League play-offs and one appearance in the Belgian soccer cup, where he only served as a substitute in almost every game and was either substituted on or off. Due to his consistently good performance, which he also brought to the next generation, Mats Rits has been courted by various international clubs over the years. The Belgian record champions RSC Anderlecht , who failed with a transfer as the narrowest of all the courtiers, and the teams PSV Eindhoven or FC Utrecht were just a few clubs that wanted to secure the young Belgian talent. It was the Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam who signed the young Belgian at the end of June 2011 and submitted a contract to him until the summer of 2013. At the club from Amsterdam he was supposed to be in the professional squad and train with the professionals, but in the beginning he should still be on the reserve team ( Jong Ajax ). There he should be built up for later missions in the Eredivisie and collect match practice by then.

Until January 2013, Rits was only on the field for the reserve team. He then switched to the Belgian first division KV Mechelen and signed a contract there until summer 2015. In March 2016, the contract was extended to summer 2019.

After Mechelen was relegated from Division 1A after the 2017/18 season, Rits moved to Club Bruges . There he received a four-year contract. At the beginning of March 2020, this contract was extended until the end of the 2023/24 season.

International

Rits played in the junior national team of his home country. For the Belgian U-17 team , he played in five friendly matches and scored one goal. For the Belgian U-19 selection , there were six friendlies with one goal.

He has not been appointed to the senior national team so far.
