Premier League 2009/10

The 2010/11 Premier League was the 19th season of the English Premier League and at the same time the 112th first division season in English football. It started on August 14, 2010 and ended on May 22, 2011.

Manchester United were victorious with nine points ahead of defending champions Chelsea . "United" won the 19th English championship in its club history and finally overtook Liverpool FC . Behind Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal FC secured the other qualifying places for the Champions League. The last three places went to Birmingham City , Blackpool FC and West Ham United , who thus had to go into the second-rate Football League Championship .

Season course

Championship decision

Manchester United compensated for the departure of the former key player Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 well in the long term and although Alex Ferguson's team was in a period of upheaval - with veterans like Edwin van der Sar , Gary Neville , Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs in the autumn of their careers - , it was constant and stable, especially in home games with 55 out of 57 possible points. Important factors were once again the stability of the central defense with the experienced Nemanja Vidić and Rio Ferdinand as well as the newcomers who were well integrated into the system, such as the Mexican talent Chicharito .

Defending champions Chelsea FC suffered from injuries to John Terry and Frank Lampard from the start of the season . Even the spectacular signing of Fernando Torres for 50 million pounds in the winter transfer period did not provide the desired initial spark, especially since this personnel brought problems with the tactical alignment. Nevertheless, a final spurt was achieved in the end, which then came to an end with the 1: 2 defeat at Old Trafford and left Chelsea in second place. Manchester City finished tied on third place , the high investments of which paid off for the first time with direct Champions League qualification and the FA Cup victory. Again, with Yaya Touré and David Silva, two top-class reinforcements had found their way to the "Citizens" and together with captain and leading figure Carlos Tévez , coach Roberto Mancini put together a powerful team, although Edin Džeko , who was bought later in the winter, and the eccentric Mario Balotelli were both theirs could not yet prove its high value in the long term.

Arsenal FC went through another year without a title win . In addition to playful highlights, such as in home games against Chelsea and Manchester United (as well as in the Champions League against FC Barcelona ), the lack of physical presence in midfield and defensive headquarters again brought decisive disadvantages in important phases of the season. The bitter league cup defeat against Birmingham City turned out to be a “broken neck” in the fight for direct Champions League qualification . Glimmers of hope, however, were the achievements of the young Jack Wilshere and the performances of the goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny . Local rivals Tottenham Hotspur missed renewed access to the premier class and only reached one Europa League place. The fact that Harry Redknapp's team did not advance into higher regions was also due to the fact that both the new star player Gareth Bale had to take injury-related breaks in the second half of the season and the fact that the strikers were at times not very accurate.

midfield

Liverpool FC , which was particularly disappointing at the start of the season, was far from the top places . Signed as the successor to trainer Rafael Benítez , the experienced successor Roy Hodgson found no access to the new environment and bad purchases such as Joe Cole , Christian Poulsen and Paul Konchesky worsened his reputation on site. Shortly after the turn of the year, the new owner of the club pulled the ripcord and installed the "Reds legend" Kenny Dalglish as Hodgson's successor. Dalglish gave the team a makeover with the sale of Torres and the signing of Luis Suárez and Andy Carroll and led the club from the bottom half of the table to a respectable sixth place. The local rival from Everton was happy with seventh place, especially given the limited financial leeway available to coach David Moyes . The offensive row once again proved to be a problem area, with at least Jermaine Beckford emerging as a future bearer of hope with ten goals. Other achievers were Leighton Baines and U-21 selection player Jack Rodwell .

Also to be rated positively was the weakly started Fulham FC , which coach Mark Hughes led to eighth place and which was rewarded with participation in the Europa League in the following season due to its good placement in the national fair play rating. Nevertheless, Hughes announced his resignation as Fulham coach at the end of the season. Even without a coach, Aston Villa was there at the start of the season after Martin O'Neill's sudden departure . The club then had to wait for successor Gérard Houllier and against the background of the difficult initial situation - Houllier had to contend with resentment from his own fans and problem players such as Richard Dunne and James Collins due to his previous history at Liverpool - the year ended with the ninth Final table space forgiving. Despite the club's internal record purchase by Darren Bent for 24 million pounds, Houllier expressed pessimism about his long-term plans and left the "Villans" prematurely for health reasons.

AFC Sunderland followed in the more closely staggered midfield , with West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United two of the three newly promoted teams as well as Stoke City and Bolton Wanderers . The team from Sunderland, supervised by Steve Bruce , had already spoken of European competitions after an extraordinarily good start to the season, before disillusionment set in after a series of eight defeats within nine league games - in addition to injury problems, the Bent sale had caused unrest in the club. “WBA” also got off to a furious start to the season and then fell so low, with 13 defeats in 18 games, that the initially celebrated coach Roberto Di Matteo was replaced by Roy Hodgson. In particular, Peter Odemwingie , who was signed up from Moscow , turned out to be a "lucky find" with 15 goals. As usual, it was turbulent in Newcastle, in a season that, in addition to an early coach release in December and the sale of crowd favorite Andy Carroll, also brought some sporting highlights, including a 5-1 in the derby against Sunderland and 4: 4 against Arsenal after 0: 4 residue. Stoke City, Tony Pulis ' team, often criticized for its allegedly antiquated style of play , was far from relegation ranks in its third consecutive year in the first division, ensured playful accents with the tricky wing game over Jermaine Pennant and Matthew Etherington and qualified via the FA Cup final participation for the first time for the Europa League. This qualification was at the expense of the Bolton Wanderers, who had previously failed in the semifinals at Stoke. Otherwise, Owen Coyle's team, which is in a state of upheaval, was increasingly ambitious and modern; Daniel Sturridge, on loan from Chelsea at the end of January 2011, fit in well with the collective.

Relegation battle

The Blackburn Rovers also seemed to be heading for a seemingly secure midfield position when the new Indian owners surprisingly fired coach Sam Allardyce in December and appointed the inexperienced newcomer Steve Kean as his successor. The decision almost resulted in relegation and only a few liberation blows at the end of the season saved the team in which the defensive talent Phil Jones celebrated his breakthrough and who then promptly moved to Manchester United for 16 million pounds. Wigan Athletic under Roberto Martínez were already relegated in the penultimate game before the "Latics" turned a 2-0 deficit against West Ham United into a 3-2 win and a subsequent 1-0 away win said goodbye to relegation spots at the last minute in Stoke. As in previous years, the team, from which the Frenchman Charles N'Zogbia stood out, was again very inconsistent and surprising successes such as the 1-0 at Spurs were faced with disastrous performances such as the 0: 4 against bottom West Ham. Also only on the last day of the game the Wolverhampton Wanderers secured themselves relegation after a long-distance duel against Birmingham, in which the "Wolves" shortened to 2: 3 with two goals against Blackburn so that they had a better goal difference against Birmingham at the last minute. which in turn only lost in the closing stages in Tottenham. For the "Wolves", who celebrated spectacular home wins against Chelsea and Manchester, it was important that players like Steven Fletcher compensated for the absence of striker Kevin Doyle in the decisive phase .

A particularly bitter disappointment was the relegation for Birmingham City , which had recently won the league cup and thus also qualified for the Europa League. Although coach Alex McLeish was certified to do a good job at the club in the medium term, a sudden weakness in form coupled with long-term injuries ensured that the "Blues" were never able to distance themselves significantly from the relegation ranks and with only one point from the last six league games in the end only 18th. Took up closing table space. Blackpool FC had also been able to hope to stay in the class right up to the end and left the relegation zone with an interim 2-1 at champions Manchester United before the game was lost 4-2. The highlights for Ian Holloway's team with the top performers Charlie Adam and David Vaughan were both the two wins against Liverpool, but above all the 4-0 opening win against Wigan. The performances of West Ham United were disappointing, which , unlike many relegation competitors , stuck to their coach Avram Grant , but who could not prevent almost the entire squad from showing no normal form with the exception of Scott Parker and consequently the team the "red lantern" received last.
