Mahmoud Mokhtar or Mahmud Muchtar ( Arabic محمود مختار, DMG Maḥmūd Muḫtār ; * May 10, 1891 in Nesha in the Nile Delta region; † March 28, 1934 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian sculptor . Despite his early death, his influence on Egyptian art today is extremely great. He is considered the father of modern Egyptian sculpture .

Mokhtar moved to Cairo in 1908, where he attended the newly established art school. In 1911 he received a scholarship to study in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts . In France, he befriended members of the Wafd party and was inspired by them to create a design for his famous statue, Nahdit Misr, or "Egypt's Renaissance", unveiled in 1928 in Ramses Square and now opposite Cairo University - Bridge stands. Mokhtar, who received many honors in Paris and Cairo, also created two monumental statues of the Egyptian politician Saad Zaghlul Pasha (one in Alexandria , the other in Cairo). Other well-known sculptures by him are The Secret Bearer , Isis and Chamasin .
