Ramses Square
The Ramses Square ( in Arabic ميدان رمسيس, DMG Maidān Ramsīs ) is a central square in Cairo .
The name comes from an ancient monumental statue of the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II , which was in the middle of the square, a roundabout . The statue was erected in 1955 under the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser . It was previously called Bab-al-Hadid Square ( Maidān Bāb al-Ḥadīd ). On 25 August 2006, the statue of Ramses II. Was near the Pyramids of Giza translocated because that caused by traffic in the square air pollution threatened to destroy the statue.
The Ramses train station ( Arabic محطة رمسيس Mahattat Ramsīs , DMG Maḥaṭṭat Ramsīs , English : Ramses Railway Station ), the main train station of Cairo. In addition, the Ramses Square with the station "Al-Shohadaa / Märtyrer" (formerly: Mubarak) has a connection to the Cairo subway.
The square is connected to both the western parts of the city (Tahrir / Downtown, Dokki and Gizeh ) and the eastern suburbs of Cairo ( Heliopolis and Abbasia) via Ramses Street and the October 6th Bridge .
