Career

Non-league football

Between 2000 and 2005, DJ Campbell spent his playing career in the so-called non-league football area of English football. With numerous goals at the lower class clubs, he recommended himself for a chance at a professional club. Campbell was particularly able to excel at FC Yeading by scoring 65 goals in 88 league games. On June 7, 2005 Campbell signed a contract with Brentford FC .

DJ Campbell in professional football

His new club was operating in the third-tier Football League One at this time . DJ Campbell quickly became a regular, scoring nine goals in 23 league games before moving again on January 31, 2006 to join Birmingham City for £ 500,000 . His new club from Birmingham played in the first division, but rose at the end of the season from the Premier League 2005/06 . Campbell had n't managed to hit a goal in the Premier League , but he was more successful in the Football League Championship and at the end of the season celebrated the resurgence of his team in the Football League Championship 2006/07 . City finished second behind Sunderland AFC and returned to the Premier League.

At the beginning of the new season Campbell signed a 4-year contract with the English second division team Leicester City for 1.6 million pounds . The start at his new club was very disappointing, as Leicester surprisingly rose from the Football League Championship 2007/08 to the third-rate Football League One . Only one point was missing from the saving 21st place in the table and Coventry City . Campbell could not meet the expectations placed in him at Leicester City and was loaned to Blackpool FC during the 2008/09 season. There he was able to show his striker qualities better between January and June 2009 and scored nine goals in 20 appearances in the Football League Championship 2008/09 .

Also in the Football League Championship 2009/10 , DJ Campbell acted on loan. From November 2009 to January 2010, he scored three goals in eight games for Derby County . He then returned from February to June 2010 to Blackpool FC , who was now coached by Ian Holloway and had already been Campbell's coach at Leicester City. There, too, he proved to be on target again and with eight goals in 15 games ensured that Blackpool finished sixth at the end of the season and moved into the play-offs . There Blackpool won the first leg at home 2-1 against Nottingham Forest , before Campbell became an acclaimed hero with three goals in the 4-3 win in the second leg. After the 3-2 win in the final at Wembley against Cardiff City , the club rose to the surprise of everyone in the Premier League . After the season, Campbell had to return to Leicester City as the new coach Paulo Sousa did not want to do without him. However, on August 31, 2010, he signed a 2-year contract in Blackpool.

Campbell also quickly found his way in the 2010/11 Premier League and scored seven goals in his first 18 league appearances. Blackpool FC also surprisingly distanced themselves significantly from the relegation places until the end of the first half of the season.
