Roberto Di Matteo (born May 29, 1970 in Schaffhausen , Switzerland ) is a former Italian soccer player and today's soccer coach . In 2008 Di Matteo began a career as a coach in England , initially below the Premier League , and eventually returned to Chelsea in 2011. In March 2012, the previous assistant coach became temporarily head coach of Chelsea FC and, within three months, led him to the greatest triumph in the club's history to date, winning the UEFA Champions League . From October 2014 to May 2015 Di Matteo was head coach of FC Schalke 04 , later he coached Aston Villa for a short time .

After an overall positive season, almost a promotion to the second-rate Football League Championship , he left the club for West Midlands to West Bromwich Albion . After this successful period as an interim coach, Di Matteo signed a new two-year contract with Chelsea in June 2012. His successor was Rafael Benítez . Less than a month later, he was voted Swiss Coach of the Year .
